Chanting the Psalms
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands! --Psalms 100:1
Chanting holds an essential place in the spiritual practice of both East and West. Through chant we are able to embody the teachings--that is, to get them in our bodies--as we employ our breath, tongues, lips, and voices to bring the scriptures to life.
The chant employed at Open Circle is the traditional Latin psalm-chant of the monastic West. Its repetitive, but beautiful, patterns form the basis of a sounded rather than silent style of meditation. The Zen style of chanting the Buddhist sutras is employed for meetings of our Zen sitting group.
